Computer Recommendation Shortlist

There’s only a handful of details that I recommend when buying a computer of any type:

Windows PCNotes
Price$500-700
ProcessorPassmark at or about 15,000
Memory/RAM8GB-16GB (32GB is overkill for most)
Storage512MB minimum, 1TB fits most
For the Passmark score, search the exact processor model and the term “passmark” for the approximate score from cpubenchmark.com
MacNotes
Memory/RAM16GB (32GB is overkill for most)
Storage512MB minimum, 1TB fits most

Why do I recommend these specs above? Well in the case of Windows, there are quite a few makes and models to choose from and they change very rapidly (every 1-2 weeks), so mentioning a specific model or manufacturer’s line is moot. The specs are fluid and so are the responses. I can only make recommendations for this week or possibly the next, but the model could be sold out or replaced or otherwise rendering the recommendation invalid.

With Apple computers, the models change 1-2 times per year, so it’s much easier to pull out a specific model. However, it makes more sense to choose the computer based on how you’ll use it (ie you’re very mobile so you need a laptop, or you only use it at your desk so you can choose a desktop with the large screen).

The other recommendations based on memory and storage is the balancing act of how many apps you run at once and how demanding they are to the system, as well as how they’ll change over time, and how much data you need to carry with you at any given time. Windows reserves about 64GB for its own use, so a 128GB-256GB storage drive is substantially used before you even get to copy your data to it. Macs generally reserve about 20GB or less, so a 256GB drive can be sufficient if utilizing external/cloud storage actively. Most people don’t do this, and Apple doesn’t make it very clear that your data is on your computer or iCloud or otherwise, so I always recommend 512GB as the minimum. Add to the fact that BOTH styles of computers have very few (if any) changeable parts and the recommendations are even more so required.

All but the most powerful, attention deficit disorder or heavy programming/media/video users need 16GB RAM. 8 is the minimum recommended, but 16GB is insurance for the life of the computer.

Finally, it helps to know what you’re coming from and what you’re actually using. You’ll need at least what you have with a new warranty to move forward.
